The Drift
If you find yourself wandering along the coast of Westward Ho! and craving a spot that combines relaxed elegance with culinary flair, The Drift on Golf Links Rd is a destination worth knowing. Set against a breezy coastal backdrop in Bideford EX39 1LH, this restaurant blends comfort, accessibility, and a versatile menu that pleases both casual diners and refined palates alike.
Let’s start with the vibe. The Drift is designed with comfort and inclusivity in mind - from a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance to seating and toilets that accommodate everyone, the space feels open and thoughtfully laid out. It has a warm, coastal charm without pretension, and its outdoor seating offers a lovely option when the Devon sunshine makes an appearance. Whether you're flying solo or meeting friends for a relaxed dinner, the ambiance is calm, the layout is airy, and the staff keep the energy laid-back but attentive.
Now, let’s talk food - because this is where The Drift really begins to shine.
The menu reads like a greatest hits collection for comfort food done right. One minute you’re indulging in crispy arancini with a creamy core, the next you’re being tempted by scallops that arrive seared and nestled on a silky purée. Their Fish and Chips is a standout - golden, crisp batter hugging flaky fish with chips that are thick, hot, and unapologetically satisfying. Pair it with a cold beer or a glass from their impressive wine list, and you've got a proper British classic done to a high standard.
Pizza lovers, take note: The Prawn and Pepper Pizza is not your average slice. It’s punchy, colorful, and full of fresh toppings on a wood-fired crust. Prefer something simpler? The Margherita Pizza offers that nostalgic, no-fuss perfection. But it’s not all savory delights - desserts here are bold, rich, and worth every bite. From Tiramisu that balances espresso and mascarpone just right, to Chocolate Fondant that oozes like a dream, there’s a sense that the kitchen takes real pride in sweet finales.
They also make an Irish Coffee that’s strong enough to perk you up and smooth enough to sip slowly - a nice touch after a meal, especially when paired with a decadent Chocolate Brownie or a plate of Pavlova that crackles under the spoon and melts on your tongue. It’s this kind of attention to both quality and texture that really elevates the experience.
For those looking for lighter fare or sharing options, you’ll find chicken wings, small plates, and vegetarian dishes that don’t feel like afterthoughts. The Drift clearly knows its audience: from solo lunch-goers and weekend daters to families just off the beach. There's free water refills, healthy options, and a great tea selection if you're looking to keep it low-key.
From a service perspective, The Drift ticks a lot of boxes that modern diners care about. They offer dine-in service, delivery, and a curated drink list featuring spirits, wines, beers, and coffee that elevate the experience without overwhelming you with choice. The flow of service is relaxed but responsive, allowing you to enjoy the meal without ever feeling rushed.
The Drift isn’t trying to be trendy for the sake of it. Instead, it feels like a confident, well-run restaurant that knows what it does best - and delivers it consistently. Whether you’re there for a quick bite, a celebratory meal, or simply to unwind with a flan and a cup of tea, it offers the kind of coastal dining experience that lingers in your memory long after the last spoonful.

What great service. So polite and keen to please. The food was lovely - the best risotto I've eaten out. And sitting outside provided a cool breeze on a summer's evening, with the setting sun. Went twice during our first time staying actually in Westward Ho! The traffic outside irritated, slightly, but this is no greasy fish and chips establishment (which we succumed to, as well) - great place. We have decided to rent the same cottage next year, and where do you think we will be eating..? Yum.
Best pizza I've ever had!!!! And they brought a bed out for our dog
Great lunch experience. Food was good and came without delay. Service was exceptional with every customer being treated with care and respect.
Local family run restaurant with absolutely lovely staff, very tasty food & big lovely portions! Super glad we chose here to eat this evening!
Came here on Sunday lunch time. Dogs are allowed in which is great. The pizza was really tasty and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I did drop a star on atmosphere as there was lots of cutlery clanging going on while we were there which I wasn't a fan of!
